Melanie Klein. So true. So weird. But just something there. I really liked the play Mrs Klein and think the playwright probably nailed her personality. She must have been some force of nature and a very difficult mother to have.
YES! She isn't called "the witch of psychoanalysis" for nothing. There are quite some relationships I'd love to learn more about in Klein's life! People usually focus on Anna Freud or her daughter Melitta Schmideberg but another interesting conflict is with Paula Heimann. Heimann was one of Klein's greatest supporters and in analysis with her (with breaks) for 18 years 🤯 And then broke up over theoretical differences with Heimann's famous paper on countertransference. Fascinating stuff!
After reading Schmideberg’s paper on reassurance in analysis and then Heimann’s monumental paper on countertransference, I keep wondering how powerful Klein’s impact must have been. These women were close to her, shaped by her, and then made theory by departing from her. Schmideberg’s paper reads so personally once you know who her mother was. I’m always fascinated by the phantasy behind the theories. Someone needs to write this story.
